Living in or near Europe puts you in a spectacularly fortunate situation when it comes to travelling. You have a vast array of landscapes, cultures, and activities to choose from, many of which are just a quick flight or train ride away. Choosing which one to go with can be a bit daunting, so here, we go through a few lovely ideas to spark your imagination.
Sojourn on a Tuscan Vineyard
If you’re looking for an absolutely classic travel option, then you should consider going to stay on a Tuscan vineyard for a few nights. Flights to somewhere in the area like Florence or Siena shouldn’t be too expensive, and from there, you can hire a car, arrange for a transfer or take public transport. Once on the vineyard, you can participate in tours and wine tastings in the sun, swimming in a pool when that gets too much. Many vineyards also produce all their own food, meaning you can eat local cuisine produced and cooked by locals in traditional styles.
Energise Yourself Surfing in the Atlantic Ocean
If you’re looking for something a little more action-based, you could go surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. The stretch of coast running down from Biarritz in France all the way to the south of Portugal boasts world-class waves, and there are plenty of beautiful places to stay.
If you don’t already surf, you can book yourself onto a surfing retreat, packed full of surfing lessons from local experts and relaxing yoga sessions to limber you up. You can do as much or as little actual surfing as you like – you can also just relax in a beach-front bar and drink all day if that takes your fancy.
Bask in the Ruins of Rome
For those who feel like embracing a little more culture, you might find your happy place in the ruins of Rome. There are countless places to stay, travel shouldn’t be too expensive, and the food is divine. You can spend your days wandering around the ancient parts of the city, and your nights dancing on boat bars and clubs floating along the river.
Kayak up the Fjords of Norway
If you feel like embracing a real adventure, then why not go on a kayaking tour around the fjords of Norway? You absolutely don’t have to be an expert – while you can hire boats and make the trip alone, you can also join a guided tour, staying in huts or tents along the way. You’ll get to see some of the most pristine landscapes on the entire continent, travelling under your own steam. It’s an absolutely transformative experience, and if you’re extra lucky, you might even be blessed with a sighting of the famous aurora borealis.
Dive into Eastern Europe
Due to its size and vast variety, most visitors to Europe make the (understandable) mistake of getting stuck in Western Europe and missing out on Eastern Europe. Historically and culturally they are two different places and hence have different things to offer. Make time for both!
